Your vacation home is waiting!

We have just the place for you.

Are you planning a trip to Destin’s most popular boating destination? Crab Island is the perfect spot to have some fun in the sun on your next vacation. If you have any questions about this popular Destin attraction, we’ve got you covered! Here is the ultimate guide to visiting Crab Island in Destin, Florida:

1. Crab Island Isn’t Actually an Island

Despite the name, Crab Island isn’t actually an island, but a submerged sandbar that is completely covered by water. Years ago, this sandbar was an island, but due to years of erosion from tidal currents and hurricanes, it is now covered in 1 to 4 feet of water in most areas. Crab Island is now Destin’s most popular and beautiful gathering place and is the perfect spot to drop anchor and spend the day enjoying the emerald waters.

2. How to Get to Crab Island

Boats are typically the best way to reach Crab Island since the currents are too strong to swim there. The most popular mode of transportation to the island is by renting a pontoon. You can comfortably accommodate a big group while saving money by splitting the price of the rental. You can also go on an excursion with the Crab Island Shuttle that’ll take you back and forth from shore. If you’d like, rent some jet skis or kayaks for a fun adventure to the island.

3. When to Go to Crab Island

With attendance growing every year, we recommend coming during a holiday weekend if you want to be a part of the excitement. Up to 1,000 vessels anchor at Crab Island in Destin, Florida during Memorial Day weekend or the 4th of July. During these times, you should arrive early in the morning in order to secure a good spot. The water is prettiest during high tide when the blue green water flows from the Gulf of Mexico to Choctawhatchee Bay. Make sure to check Destin’s tide charts and weather apps before you plan your trip to Crab Island.

4. Don’t Forget to Bring Cash

You’ll want to bring cash for all the floating vendors at Crab Island. Explore the floating restaurants, bars, mobile food boats and souvenir shops. Eat, drink and soak in the sun with your group! Some of these establishments may accept credit or debit cards, but we recommend bringing cash just in case. After you’ve done your eating and shopping, check out all the fun activities like snorkeling, football, volleyball and more. There are even floating concerts and live music throughout the summer!
